SPECIAL EFFECTS ON CELLULOID / EFFETS SPÉCIAUX SUR PELLICULE

Educational program in Montréal

Participants in this hands-on workshop will learn the traditional techniques for creating optical effects on film using a 16mm JK optical printer. On the first day of the workshop, participants will learn how to test, choose film stock, load the camera, shoot sequences and create optical effects, including colour manipulation, mattes, split-screens, titles, optical zooms and Super 8 blow-ups. Over the course of the second day, participants will have the opportunity to practice on the printer to further explore the range of effects that are possible with the JK. Instructor: Alexandre Larose

Alexandre Larose is a French-Canadian artist based in Montreal. His moving-image practice investigates phenomena of appearance and representation as translated by the media of optics and celluloid. His approach relies on a methodical stripping out of layers embedded in both the live subjects and the technique that translates them into visual artifacts. His work has screened internationally since 2006.
