Gillian King

My name is Gillian King and I am a multi-disciplinary visual artist current residing in Winnipeg, Manitoba and moving to Montreal, Quebec this fall of 2011. In 2007 I began studying at the School of Art at the University of Manitoba and I am graduating with my Bachelor of Fine Arts with an Honours in Painting this fall. Since being in Fine Arts I have immersed myself heavily in the community by collaborating with fellow artists, participating as the Painting Representative on Student council, being a member of the Fine Arts Fundraising and Party Planning Committees for the Students of Fine Arts Students Association (SOFA SA), curating the SOFA Gallery at Edna Fedya Restaurant, and teaching painting classes privately and though Forum Art Institute. Recently, I have also started a new gallery called Gallery Ingenue, which is located in Stella’s Café and Bakery on Osborne Street. I run the gallery and curate monthly shows featuring emerging Winnipeg artists, many of which are current students or alumni of the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Manitoba.
I believe that using what you do to help make a difference is important therefore I donate a portion of each of my personal sales to Kwagala Foundation, a local grassroots organization to help empower communities in Uganda to attain sustainable living. For two years now I have also participated in the Children of the World Art Auction to raise money for women and children who still suffer from the aftermath of the Rwandan genocide and will be a participating artist for that cause again this June. I have also helped to organize 'Create for Pakistan', a series of artist workshops where all the sales of the art made go back to help in the relief for the flooding in Pakistan.
Upon graduating I am moving to Montreal to continue my art practice before applying to graduate school.
